Peanut Centre Nursery is located on Highway 77, just north of Leamington, Ontario,
in what was formerly known as the hamlet of ‘Peanut Centre’.
The rich soil was prime for peanut growing as it is today for growing nursery stock.
For over 40 years, Peanut Centre Nursery has been providing quality plants to Windsor,
Essex County & surrounding areas. Established in 1973 by Ted DeGoey, the nursery
changed from tomatoes to nursery stock, row by row. On the weekends, Ted would
load up his wagon and truck and drive to the newly established subdivisions that
were popping up everywhere and sell his shrubs, even offering planting services.
Often customers would refer Ted’s services to a friend and there Peanut Centre Nursery
had begun. The nursery became a place where customers could come and dig their
own shrubs and evergreens from the field at a reasonable price.
After his passing in March 1998, Ted’s wife Josephine and their youngest son, Stephen,
who was 19 at the time, worked together for the spring season, planning to close the
nursery for good. Stephen, who was attending Wilfrid Laurier University, made the
decision to leave school and open the nursery as his full time career. Ownership changed
hands later that year and Stephen set off to make Peanut Centre Nursery the garden centre
and nursery that it is today.
Peanut Centre Nursery has evolved from a small coldframe greenhouse and 4 acres
of field grown nursery stock to a full-service garden centre boasting a large perennial
growing greenhouse and 8 acres of high quality trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials,
landscape boulders, mulches & soil.
Stephen continues to grow nursery stock and provide installation services, while his
wife Katherine manages the retail garden centre.
